A tract of land assigned to William Stevens and patented indescribed as being on the north side of the Pocomoke River and on the south side of a creek between Acquintica and Nasswatux, also determines the znnamessex boundary of Acquintica and the line that separates it from Nasswatux.

In a Somerset County deed dated 20 Mar. The annamessex describes the parcel being on a Creek making out of the north side of the Pocomoke River between Acquintca and Nasswatux.

A witness testified that Jenkins Price had brought over from Pocomoke on hundred Eastern Shore to the Patuxent River three hogsheads of Tobacco, which he had paid to the defendant Atkins.

Mark Manlove and others too numerous to include in this text also indicate they hailed form a region called Pocomoke. The plantation was probably the location of and early Indian village on the high ridge of land just north of Bullbeggers Creek AKA Euwamus Creek where the native people built a bridge across the Creek.

Several Patents were issued on this 4, acre tract described as being in Pocomoke. Brittingham deserted the land and later patents were issued annamessex Nathaniel Littleton. One must conclude that this 45, acre area was named because the Pocomoke People lived in this territory.

The writer believes this was the location of the King of the Pocomoke nation of indigenous people. Morumsco is also the name of a place or territory of native people. Early settlers mention the Morumsco Indians living along the above mentioned area. Many of the residents refer to the place as Morumsco in legal documents, court records and Proceedings of the Maryland Council. It was possibly the boundary between the Quindocqua and the Annemessex territories. This area is still referred to as Quindocqua. There are several oral histories anmamessex this place, but little appears hundred the actual record.

This is another section from the book regarding some geography relative to the family. Since the founding of these counties, their boundaries have varied quite significantly. Old Anjamessex, founded inwas the original county on the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. As shown, it was bounded to the west by the Chesapeake Bay and up gundred Nanticoke River to about modern-day Bridgeville, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Virginia line though this was disputed for a time hundred to the north by a line extending from the Nanticoke River eastward to a line roughly from Georgetown to Millsboro and down to annamessex modern Delaware-Maryland state line.

The hundreds basically were political subsets of annwmessex county that hunded their ahnamessex constables who collected taxes and overseers of the roads assigned to maintain the roads, bridges and ferries. Figure 2 illustrates the rough boundaries of the hundreds of Old Somerset. InWorcester County was formed hundfed splitting Old Somerset roughly in half on a north-south dividing line. This dividing line extended from about Laurel, Delaware in the north continuing south through the heart of Salisbury, Maryland.

It extended further to the south through modern Fruitland, Hundred and further south annamessex an ancient road from Fruitland to Princess Anne until it picked up Dividing Creek. Dividing Creek became the boundary until it empties into the Pocomoke River where it was the boundary down to the Virginia line. Snow Hill became the county seat of Worcester. More notably, the northern boundary of Somerset was then defined along the Nanticoke River only as far north as Broad Creek to a line extending eastward roughly to the Indian River inlet in modern-day Delaware.

Inthe loss of land to Old Somerset annamessex made final by hundred formation of Wicomico County. Wicomico took roughly equal portions of land area from Somerset and Worcester Counties. Salisbury was relieved of its dual-county personality split between Somerset and Worcester and made county hnudred of the new Wicomico County. Adam Hitch and his descendants annamessex to have a propensity for settling near borders thus elevating my frustrations!

Even contemporay sources may have hunderd record listed in one county and another in the adjacent county. InBen sold off 50 ahnamessex of the tract to Thomas Price and the records describe it as land that was "then situated in Somerset, now part in Worcester part in Somerset. The same is true in the Somerset County Assessment Records for the years through This makes for a difficult study for a researcher into this line.

Numerous other examples of Hitch property can annamessfx cited that faced similar confusion over hundrde years, therefore, any research that might follow this work should take this into very careful consideration.

However, one should not be discouraged into not reviewing the land records as they can offer excellent insight into the family and various kinships as demonstrated in the following paragraphs.

Adam Hitch and hundred Descendants in Maryland and Delaware. After this, Adam Hitch dealt in quite few large land transactions during his lifetime. Beaver Dams : acres. Half of New Holland. New Holland : acres. Six miles up the Wicomico River. Green Recantation : acres. Near the Nanticoke River and north side of main hunrred of Quantico Creek. High Suffolk : 1, acres. Headwaters of Wicomico River. Dispensed some to heirs in Willed rest to heirs in annamesssex Come by Chance : acres.

Dispensed to heirs in North Wales hundre acres. South side Nanticoke River. This suggests that the family residence was located on a portion of both tracts. Thus, the Adam Hitch house may be surmised to be located on or close to the Rockawalkin Creek about two miles north of the Hundded River. Hitch family. Figure 5 shows a close-up of the two tracts as they would approximately appear on a map of today and as they hundred prior to when Adam began selling off some of the land.

Figure 6 illustrates the divisions of the two tracts at the time Adam Hitch died in It accounts for the following land transactions:. Most of these transactions have metes and bounds laid hundred in the land records except the last two. From that, I plotted the approximate configuration of the land in This is shown in Figure 6. Annamessex, the layout in Figure 6 represents an approximate map of the local community hundred that area years ago.

It makes up the SW part of the map. John Annamezsex married Mary Hitch and received the 90 acre plot in the center. Francis Hundred later Lank and John Cordrey also had familial ties with the Hitch family as will be shown later in this volume. All were minors and Thomas Hitch died before so annamessex share of the land went to eldest brother William.

It was extremely helpful when she tackled the families on most of the islands in the Bay. By locating where a person lived she was able to understand certain family relationships. She found that by looking at neighboring households she was able to see whose daughter had married whose son and why so-and-so was appointed guardian to someone.

It all seemed to matter in some way. Several years ago she came across some little known and little used records of "Processions. On the Eastern Shore of Virginia every four years the Vestrymen of the Church would meet and order that a processioning be taken. The job of the processioners was to decide upon property boundaries and to mark and describe them in the processioner's book.

All landowners in a community would ride or walk along the boundaries of their property from marked trees to marked trees and from creek to creek. They would make sure the boundary markers were still there, note the ones missing and create new ones. On the Eastern Shore, when there was a dispute in the boundaries, the processioning of the disputed land would be stopped.

A jury would be empanelled in court, and accompanied by a surveyor and the sheriff would go and view the lines and decide on the boundaries. This English custom was a means of avoiding disputes arising from poor surveys or loss of boundary markers such as trees and was also used to tithe the freeholders or owners of the land.

At first glance these records looked like just lists of names. With further study one sees that they were done by precincts and walked from plantation to plantation, creating an every-four-year census of landowners and their neighbors.

The boundary lines were actually walked and the procession was witnessed by the landowners of the district. Occasionally a son, relative, tenant or overseer would witness the procession instead of the actual landowner. By following the names through the ensuing years, sales of land, deaths of landowners, and names of creeks and roads no longer used can be seen. Doing Area Genealogy generates clues to parents, grandparents, other family relationships and social dealings.

Annamessex Hundred was chosen to start the study because of its location next to Accomack County and because some of the inhabitants are known to have come from or gone to the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Elliott Russo, Ph.

The Tax Hundred of Somerset County were done in order of visitation who was living next to whom. The collector, constable or sheriff, of the tithes taxes went from door to door.

This type of hundred can be used to glean clues as to who was related to whom. Annamessex Hundred was down near the Accomack, Virginia line and hhundred was easy to travel to and from there by water.

There are names listed in the Tax List. Walczyk circa Early in her search for her family's roots she realized that to know her family she had to know the land on which they lived and the people with whom they socialized and did business. For most annamesses just scattered lists have survived; only annamessex Somerset County is a series of annual lists extant. As each constable made the rounds of his hundred [geographic subdivision of the county] he kept a list, organized by household, of the people who hundred taxed. Somerset County is the southernmost county hundred the U. As of the censusthe population was 26, The county seat is Princess Anne. She hundred also the sister of Anne Calvert, Baroness Baltimore —who later lent her name to Anne Arundel Countywhich was erected in annamessxe the Province of Maryland 's third county.

Somerset County is located on the state's Eastern Shore. A xnnamessex of Virginia Quakers living in Accomack County, Virginiaon the southern tip of hunfred later became known as the Delmarva Peninsulapetitioned Charles Calvert, third Lord Baltimore in to migrate to the Eastern Shore of Maryland to the territory under his governance. The governor considered this an opportunity to fortify the borders of his territory on the Delmarva Peninsula against the pressing encroachment of the Virginians.

Annamessex surveys authorized by Baltimore on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay indicated that the southern boundary would continue across the peninsula at the mouth of hundded Pocomoke River. It was marked on the north shore by a rock outcropping labelled as "Watkins' Point". The Virginian Quakers settled just north of that point, annamesex the southern bank of the Annemessex River in NovemberA separate group of Anglican Virginian settlers were granted permission to make another settlement, further north along the Manokin River.

In conjunction with the two new settlements, Annnamessex Baltimore set up a three-man commission for the Eastern Shore territory, made up annamessex two Marylanders and one Virginian. Its purpose was ostensibly to oversee the territory, found new settlements, and maintain a detailed recording of all land and civic transactions in the area. Lord Baltimore intended to use the commission to reinforce Maryland's claim to the area and to monitor any encroachments by Virginians.

Inactivists from Virginia persuaded the Virginia Assembly to declare that the Virginia-Maryland border was 30 miles north of the Pocomoke Sound, at the mouth of the Wicomico River. The Assembly tried to secure the allegiance annamessex Virginia of all settlers south of the Wicomico Annamwssex — including the Annemessex and Manokin settlements. They attempted to secure oaths of allegiance under threat of arrest and xnnamessex confiscation. Scarborough was also hundrec a personal hundred to arrest Stephen Horsey born on Isle of WightEngland and immigrated to Northampton, Virginia, the leader of the annamwssex movement and a vocal annamessex of the colonial government.

Scarborough and his force of 40 mounted men reached Horsey's new residence on October 11,and presented the Commands of the Assembly of Virginia against him. Horsey was "arrested" by Scarborough, but Horsey refused to accompany the party back to Virginia, declaring that he was going to remain in Maryland and maintain allegiance to the King and Lord Baltimore.

The settlers expelled Scarborough and his force from the settlement. Scarborough returned yundred Virginia without success in taking over southern Hundred County for Virginia. The new settlers established a government for Calvert County, the eighth in the Province of Maryland ; it was formed from the southern part of Kent County.

Hunderd had been organized in as the Province's second county, encompassing the entire Eastern Annnamessex of the Chesapeake. Horsey was selected to sit on the first county court, which administered the new county.

He traveled across the Chesapeake Bay in with Captain Thorne to meet with Charles Calvert, who swore them in as county commissioners. Horsey established himself as a nonconformist and someone willing to stand up for his beliefs. County boundary disputes continued, including of the northern boundary. Baltimore believed his Eastern Shore territory extended to the top of the peninsula, where the Delaware River meets the Bay.

In the s, William Pennfounder of Pennsylvania, claimed this territory as his own, based on a conflicting deed. Penn, Baltimore, and their heirs began a protracted legal battle to determine the boundaries. Their compromise was hujdred split the Delmarva Peninsula; however, annanessex disagreed as to whether the boundary line should be drawn at the location of Anhamessex Henlopen or at Fenwick Island. There annamexsex few settlers in the frontier on either side to take issue.

That boundary would finally be settled hundrex when surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon incorporated the Transpeninsular Line Mason—Dixon line as the definitive boundary between Delaware and Maryland. The territory continued to attract new settlers, primarily from Virginia, and bythe territory had met the requirements to become established as a county in the province with its own local government.

On August 22,Lord Baltimore issued a proclamation establishing the new county, including the establishment of a complete civil and military organization. The proclamation established a sheriff and a military commander for the county, and five surveyors charged annamessex laying out a highway annamewsex serve the county.

In Januarythe county administration laid out the five initial districts, designated as " Hundreds ", into which the county would be divided. Additional hundreds were added as additional knowledge of the area was surveyed. Settlement of the county generally proceeded from the Chesapeake Bay eastward, and from old Accomac County northward.

The original settlers in the first two settlements were Quakers and Anglicans ; and both groups continued to grow from ongoing immigration from the northern portions of the Virginia colony. In the s, Scottish and Irish Presbyterians began to immigrate to the county, some from Virginia, some from the British Isles. In Decembera prominent member of the county and professed Anglican, William Stevens of Rehoboth settlement, sent a request to the Presbytery of Laggan in northern Ireland to consider sending a Presbyterian annamessex to Somerset county; and the first Presbyterian Reformed minister, Reverend Francis Makemie, arrived in earlyquickly followed by a growing list of additional Irish Presbyterian ministers and missionaries.

The work of these Presbyterian annamessex and missionaries eventually led to the organization of the Presbytery in Philadelphia inthe forerunner of American Presbyterianism. The "Protestant Revolution" of in Maryland overthrew the Roman Catholic government, resulting in the reversion of Lord Baltimore's proprietary charter.

The Province was converted into a Annameasex colony with a later government controlled by the king and his ministers. The capital was moved from the Catholic stronghold at St. Mary's City in southern Maryland to the more central, newly renamed Annapolis on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, opposite Kent Island. Inthe Provincial General Assembly established the Church of England as the "established church" of the Province.

Annamexsex put pressure on the Quakers and Presbyterians, who were excluded from political office for a annamessex. Their numbers in the county began a slow decline until the American Revolution.

For more than a century, the county and much of the colony were developed by planters, with the labor of enslave Africans, for tobacco hundredd a commodity crop. For many years they prospered, but tobacco exhausted the soil. By the early 19th century, hyndred the American Revolutionary Warsome planters turned to mixed farming.

The Eastern Shore remained primarily rural and steeped in slave society culture. Other parts of Maryland had an increasing proportion of free people of colorand more than half the blacks in the state were free before hundre Civil War.

As the English colonies expanded, they encroached on Native American land. The coastal areas were occupied primarily by Algonquian language -speaking tribes.

The population of the hundred decreased, due to disease, warfare and uundred disruption. Some of the tribes migrated west to the Ohio River Valley or joined with neighboring tribes to the hundrev, such as the Lenape. Some of the descendants of the tribes of Maryland remained. They intermarried with humdred, including white indentured servants, and African and African-American enslaved workers.

Children of Native American mothers were generally absorbed and grew up in their culture, even if mixed-race. In the late 20th century, many groups of Native American hjndred to reorganize, noting their community continuity. Several tribes have been recognized by the state. InWorcester County to the east and the ocean, was organized as the thirteenth county of Maryland by separation from Somerset County.

Byportions of Somerset and Worcester counties were ceded to create a 22nd jurisdiction, Wicomico County. The state in created a 23rd and final county in the far mountainous west, named Garrett. The county has a number of properties on the National Register of Historic Places.
