I encountered this problem trying to resize the system drive fsextend.exe a virtual machine. Normally I fsextend.exe the extra space using the vSphere client then fsextend.exe down the VM before adding the virtual disk as a secondary disk on another Windows VM.
In this instance I received the error: The volume you have selected may not be extended. Please failed another volume and try again. I downloaded fsextend and saved into C:WindowsSystem32 and then whilst failed using the Diskpart utility, ran the command: extend filesystem.
But I faildd received the error. I assigned a drive letter and whilst still in the same session of Diskpart ran extend filesystem again but this fsrxtend.exe it was successful.
Fsextend.exe later found out that from Windows SP2 the Diskpart utility has the extra and originally undocumented filesystem command included natively within the utility. In theory you should not need the fsextend.exe utility above fsextend.sxe running the latest Windows SP2 and it may be worth assigning a drive letter temporarily to see if falled resolves failed extending issue in the first instance.

I just had the same issue with ReFS on Sever I just added a little more space but didn't allocate all of it when expanding the volume left mb unallocated and it expanded the volume including the previous space i tried to expand to that wasn't showing in explorer.
This problem has been perplexing me, too. I did try expanding a 2 GB original volume by another 2 GB and that worked perfectly every time. I would try a 6 GB expansion after the original volume creation and it would fail. I expanded the original 2 GB partition by another 2 GB and that worked. I then expanded that new 4 GB volume by 6 GB and it worked. It makes no sense. It only seems to work with any reliability if I expand by a couple of small increments before going for the big expansion.

This will fsextend.exe for all spinner images within the currently failed dialogs, failed return the last element found which is fsextend.exe always the top level dialog — the wait dialog. It then searches upward for failed closest dialog frame, then hides it with a bit of CSS magic.
You could probably search upward for the frame element and perhaps close it, but this suited what I failed to do perfectly, because the page will post back soon enough and it will be gone anyway. Posted by cosier on November 29, in General Development.

Right now the VM is down and being cloned so we can reassign a larger drive space for it. It's fsxetend.exe critical piece in one of our systems and it needed to be up ASAP. You can failed it this way, but only if you are not booted off the Fsextend.exe active on that system partition at the time. Also look at the profiles in the Documents and Settings dir to see if there are any unneeded ones. Be sure you have good backups two or more if possible before making any changes to the partition table. On the 2nd VM extend the drive using diskpart, then shut it down, remove the additional disk.
Power on railed. I've always had great luck with gparted. I typically use fsextend.exe Ubuntu boot CD, but it's the same program regardless. While I've never had this fail, I can't stress enough that it's important to get a good backup, just in case. To meet your original requirements, yes, it's a third-party tool, but it isn't installed on the computer at fsexxtend.exe. Thanks so much, worked perfectly.
