Good news is sri so few and far between when it comes to gay rights lanka our part of the world. In scrapping SectionIndia has done at last what should have been done many, many years ago. Better late than never, however. It has been a long and arduous road for the LGBT community in India, as it has been for practically all lanka us who have lived under the yoke of colonial-era laws that have criminalised and marginalised us for over a century.
By no means did I think it was going to be an easy ride on a smooth, even road to decriminalisation in Sri Lanka where I am fighting to repeal the laws that criminalise me lesbians are criminalised under the penal code and brands me as a third-class citizen in my own country. When I first started Equal Ground in and declared our intention of fighting discriminatory laws and policies, I heard several members of the community say homosexuality I had no right to rock the boat and make things difficult for them.
After all, they had their secret lives and were quite happy walking in the shadows, all their lives. I realised how wrong these laws and policies were, how it harmed lives, how it discriminated and violated people and left them by the way side, hollow shells of despair. Coming Out My coming-out days were definitely not the highlights of my life. As a teenager in Sri Lanka, I was struggling hard to come to terms with what I suspected from a very early age.
In that era, there were no counselling lines, no organisations to lean on, no internet with its amazing range of information — nothing. Dead zero! I had no one to turn to. Lanka was there that I came out with the help of my cousin Chutti. She had immigrated to San Francisco when she was about 8 and knew her way around.
She was rather a militant lesbian at the time. The minute I walked in, I knew I was home! Scenes from Gay Pride parades in San Francisco. At its head was Harvey Milk, elected to the San Francisco Homosexuality of Supervisors the year before, and already making giant waves in California for gay rights.
I lanka the day he died as it were yesterday. I remember how despondent we were, the feeling of disbelief followed by anger and pain. I was at the candlelight vigil for Harvey and then Mayor George Moscone. Harvey Milk, laws first openly gay elected official in Sri, sits outside his camera shop in a November 9, photo. A march to honour Moscone and Milk. With just a few bullets, Dan White had left San Francisco stunned and silenced and without two key political allies who had done so much for the LGBT community in such little time.
It left the gay community awash in troubled, stormy seas. Milk and his fight for equality left an indelible mark in my heart and soul. He was eloquent, he spoke from his heart and he was fearless. He opened homosexuality for the gay community and formed important networks of allies. I remember the famous Coors Beer campaign which Harvey put his shoulders into.
The Teamsters union called for a general strike of Coors Beer for its laws policies and Milk worked tirelessly to get gay bars in San Francisco and all over the US to stop serving Coors in their bars.
It worked. It sri things like this that made people sit up and listen when Milk spoke. It was things like this that bridged the gap between the homo and hetero communities.
Protest against Coors beer in Homosexuality in April The Teamsters union laws called for a general strike of Coors Beer for its discriminatory policies and Harvey Milk worked tirelessly to get gay bars in San Francisco and all over the US to stop serving Coors in their bars.
Although not involved in activism as I am now, I did my part to attend vigils, marches and protest for gay rights in San Francisco. When I returned to Sri Lanka it laws not because I wanted to be an activist for gay rights.
I just missed my parents, my friends, my country; I was homesick. After 15 years in the US, coming home was as much a shock to my system as when I first immigrated to homosexuality US and was exposed to such a free society, particularly in San Francisco where peace and love prevailed, anti-war protests were mounting and the gay liberation movement was taking off.
Laws to my home country was a defining moment in my life. In short order I began to realise that Colombo was no San Francisco. I had never known that being gay was considered a criminal offence. As the political homosexuality in Sri Lanka kept getting more and more conservative, while the death lanka from the LTTE war grew, I saw my country sink into a long black hole that engulfed everyone in its path. But I soon hit my stride. In homosexuality, I decided to move away from the WSG and form an organisation that was primarily an advocacy organisation fighting to decriminalise consensual same-sex sexual activity in Sri Lanka.
Earlier, inan attempt was made to decriminalise and it had backfired, amending the law to now include women as well. I was definitely in the fight now. My experience laws the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association ILGA for seven years — on the board as the Asian female representative for two years from and as co-secretary general from to — opened my eyes to the many platforms where we have to wage our battle against discrimination.
Fighting discrimination in the Commonwealth is not easy, considering the many countries that still criminalise same-sex relationship. But this year alone we have seen Trinidad and Tobago and India decriminalise, making consensual same-sex sexual relationships legal in 37 countries in the Commonwealth, with 15 more to go. Can we get there? I believe we can. There have been many battles, huge losses and very few victories that have marked our laws over the years.
And, yes, it is progress. If one could imagine the type of adversity we face daily, it would make waking sri each day quite a task. But wake up we do, put our boots on the ground we do and prepare for battle each day we do. The sacrifices we make each day are many lanka invisible to most.
Ask the activists in India who have been fighting this battle for decriminalisation for homosexuality 15 years. Ask Caleb Orozco who did pretty much the same in Belize, and won. This is just one battle of many. It has not been easy, it has seemed hopeless, it has been fraught with bumps along the road, but in the end they will all tell you now — it was worth it.
It has given us all hope and a glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel that one day we will also be celebrating here as Sri Lanka decriminalises.
In my mind — it will happen. It has to. We grow stronger each day. Change sometimes, most times, comes slowly. We will not give up the fight, not here, not anywhere. Congratulations India! Another giant stride lanka humankind — we applaud you.
And to all the activists who put their heart and soul into this — it is only in victory that you are not alone, but in getting there, the journey has sometimes been lonely and fraught. You hung in there. You are our heroes. Disclaimer: The opinions expressed sri this column are that of the writer. The facts and opinions expressed here do not reflect the views of www.
