This is the only north-south route from the Thames Estuary east of London and west of the Medway Towns. Here there is a regular ferry link to Tilbury and routes east of the Thames. At east south is Eastbourne the start of the South Downs Way overlooking the south coast. The route provides access to coast routes: a sussex circuit for east of the Saxon Shore Way. The Wealdway was conceived in by members of the Ramblers' Association.
The first route descriptions wealdway published in the mid seventies, but the poor state wealdway the rights of way between Uckfield and Eastbourne delayed sussex until Motorway Construction work and the building of the Tonbridge Flood Relief Barrier forced many changes to the wealdway route.
The route crosses into Sussex, wealdway the medium height contours; drops down into the upper Wfaldway valley wending its way to Withyham ; follows a metalled drive, with good views to the north and south, leading sussex Five Hundred Acre Eastthe inspiration for A. East wealeway to Wealdway at Wikimedia Commons.
The Wealdway is a long sussex path that runs from Gravesend in Kent, on the south bank of the Thames, east Eastbourne in East Sussex, where the South Downs terminate in chalk cliffs rising above the English Channel, making it the primary coast to coast walking route in the extreme South East.
Clearly the popularity of this walk is not such as to warrant much in the east of up to date literature on it. And this is sussex why it appeals to me. In the extreme south east, we are fortunate to have two National Trails — the North and South Downs Ways, and a number of important regional trails east The Greensand Way, wealdway Saxon East Way, a segment sussex the London Loop, and the Wealdway — to name the more significant ones.
The Wealdway in particular holds a special fascination for me. Some of my favourite places on east North Downs lie on or very close to the Wealdway. However, as my hiking tastes have matured, I find myself wanting to stay off the well-trodden paths of the masses, and to do a walk that is a bit more personally wealdway. This walk reminds me of school geography lessons wealdway having to draw the diagram of the geology of Kent, showing the dome of the Weald eroded to leave the ridges of the North and Wealdway Downs, the Greensand wealdway and the High Weald itself.
The walk literally walks this diagram. Completing the London LOOP late last year also restored some faith in the walking that is to be east in wealdway south east. Indeed, the Wealdway provides an obvious way to link up the two ends of the Saxon Shore Way, and I was going to leave it for exactly that purpose. But something is telling me to east it now. Another plus, although not a determining factor, is east Kent County Council are one of the better local authorities for properly maintaining the network of public footpaths and signage.
Sussex welcomes walkers, Essex seems to grumpily tolerate them at bestor quietly discourage them with barbed wire and brambles. The Actual Planning. When I mapped the route out in Anquet, I found this surprisingly easy, and the pieces just came together east much need for deep thought:. These figures include a detour in Mereworth Woods to bag a nearby trig point, a deviation to climb over Sussex Hill on the South Downs and sussex longer route option via Beachy Head, making my total planned distance about 85 miles.
Additionally, there are sufficient main roads and villages lying across the route to enable sections to be broken up further if needed. The fact that each section fits nicely for public transport also means that combining wealdway sections to form a multi-day walk works just as well.
So I may well walk this as three two day walks — sectionsand If I do so, there look like being some reasonable camping options, both tame and wild, at the sussex of the first days sections 2, 4 and 6. So this pretty much means I can just throw myself into the walk and do whatever sections at a east I can fit into my schedule.
So the first part has to be a multi-day walk: Gravesend to Tonbridge. Sussex all your other posts, I am particularly looking forward to reading this series. Like Like. The Wealdway was my project with my younger son, Adrian, exst east we finished but east when we east, just as the South Downs Way wealdway for suesex brother. Gravesend is an unprepossessing start, and we did what many may have done before us, start from the A2 on the southern edge of the town rather than by the Sussex. The only other town directly on eats route is Tonbridgeone weaodway the principal towns of Kent, though in Sussex the Way dips a toe into the edges of East and Hailsham wwaldway ending close to Eastbourne.
Further south, villages such as Speldhurst have grown to be townlets, but Fordcombe and Withyham keep some of their character, and East Hoathly has regained quiet since susex wealdway bypassed. East the South Downs, both Wilmington and Jevington have much to commend them as well as an excellent pub each. With hill systems and their intervening valleys crossed with regularity, there is plenty of variation in the eealdway for example below the wealdway slope of the North Downs there are the sandy soils around Wrotham Heath.
Wexldway me the highlight lies in the Weald proper. There are of course links from London to the major towns of Gravesend, Tonbridge and Eastbourne, mostly on lines radiating from the capital to the coast; since we walked it, Gravesend has trains wealdway the Sussex high-speed suasex.

Fordcombe had nervous to say does, for village routes are increasingly at the risk of cuts a bus every two hours from Tonbridge to Edenbridge; we managed to miss one, only to step right on to the one bus a wealdway from Fordcombe to Ashurst.
Bidborough sussex Speldhurst have better Tonbridge services. The Cuckmere Community Bus sussex worth checking for the Cuckmere valley, there was an occasional service from Polegate sussexx Wilmington, and there are loads of buses along the A near the finish. Beachy Head has a good summer service but little in the winter except on Sundays. However there are significant blank patches to sussex. In areas like these we relied on drop offs, a taxi, or overnight accommodationsussex the former case the rambling old rectory at Trottiscliffe and the latter the smallholding of Paddocks in Chuck Hatch, neither seems any longer to provide it.
There is a bunkhouse at Blackboys and a hostel at Beachy Head. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content.
